Yemenia: The Arabica Mother Population

Every few decades, coffee science produces a result that forces the textbooks to be rewritten. The last one came out of Yemen.

For a century, the accepted family tree was tidy: arabica evolved wild in Ethiopia, a handful of plants travelled through Yemen, and their descendants — the Typica and Bourbon lines — went on to populate Latin America, Asia and everywhere else. Yemen was cast as a corridor. A famous one, but a corridor.

Then researchers actually sequenced what was growing on Yemen's terraces, and the corridor turned out to be a vault.

What Yemenia actually is

Yemenia is not a single variety the way Gesha or SL28 are. It is a mother population: a broad genetic cluster of arabica plants, cultivated across Yemen's mountains for centuries, that shares no close relationship with any known variety group outside the country.

Think of arabica's global diversity as a small family photo. Before 2020, the photo had two groups in it: the wild and semi-wild Ethiopian accessions, and the cultivated Typica–Bourbon lineage that descends from the few plants which left this region centuries ago. The Yemenia discovery added a third group to the photo — one that had been standing there the whole time, farmed by Yemeni families who never needed a laboratory to know their trees were different.

Genetically, Yemenia plants are neither Ethiopian nor Typica–Bourbon. They are their own thing, shaped by centuries of selection on dry, high, stressed terraces — which is also a working definition of a landrace ecosystem at national scale.

How one study redrew the family tree

The work behind the name was led by Qima Coffee together with geneticist Christophe Montagnon's team, DNA-fingerprinting hundreds of samples collected across Yemen's growing regions and comparing them against global reference varieties. Published across 2020 and 2021, the results sorted Yemen's coffee into clusters — some overlapping with known groups, and one large cluster matching nothing in any database.

That unmatched cluster was named Yemenia.

Two details make the finding remarkable rather than merely interesting. First, scale: this was not one odd tree in one valley, but a population spread across the country's coffee heartland. Second, direction: it suggests Yemen was not just a transit point in coffee's domestication but an active centre of it — a place where arabica kept evolving under human hands long after the famous few plants sailed away.

What Yemenia tastes like

Here is where the story earns its hype. When Yemenia-verified lots began appearing in the Best of Yemen auctions, cuppers kept reaching for words rarely used about Yemeni coffee: jasmine, orange blossom, lychee, pink berries, silky acidity. The old Yemen — raisin, chocolate, wine — was still present underneath, but with a floral top layer that reads closer to a great Gesha than to the "Mokha" stereotype.

International judges responded with their wallets: top Yemenia auction lots have sold at prices most origins never see, comfortably beyond a hundred dollars per pound, which we put into context in why Yemeni coffee is rare and expensive.

A useful caution, though: Yemenia is a genetic identity, not a quality grade. A Yemenia lot can be processed badly; a non-Yemenia Udaini can cup at 90+. Genetics load the possibility. Farming and processing decide the cup.

Why it matters beyond Yemen

Arabica has a well-documented problem: it is one of the least genetically diverse major crops on the planet, and a warming climate is stress-testing that narrow gene pool everywhere. Breeders searching for heat tolerance, drought resistance and disease resilience can only work with the diversity that exists.

Yemenia widened the search space overnight — an entire untouched population that evolved specifically under heat, drought and thin mountain soil. For coffee's next fifty years, that may prove to be Yemen's most valuable export of all. There is a certain justice in it: the place that gave the world its first farmed coffee may end up giving it the genes to keep farming coffee at all.

Coffee sold casually as "Yemenia" without verification is a label, not a fact — treat the word on an offer sheet the way you would treat "Gesha" from an unknown source.
